the symptom or adding to the problem. >>> and can anyone beat sko brown? >>> good day. we're live in washington this afternoon. the lines of communication between the president, leaders of congress are open. whether those lines are used repeatedly over the next few days to reach a fiscal cliff deal is anybody's guess. joining me now for our daily fix, nbc's kelly o'donnell is live on capitol hill. kelly, i want to start with you. senator scott brown just tweeted out to all his followers that he was getting on a plane heading to washington. the president has apparently sent over a new deal to the senate. what can you tell us about this new fiscal cliff deal that president obama has sent over to senator leaders? >> well, the power of social media to get the word out. gop sources say in the conversation with the president, he indicated that he does have a bill he would like to bring forward to the hill today. they have not seen that. it would be a package to deal with averting the fiscal cliff. we can infer from that with what the president said before he went to the family vacation
the information that ted kennedy jr. will not run. scott brown doing well in all the polls. president obama will be fully engaminged in pass pass. how is that looking? they don't have a big horse to run. >> the polls show a good chance of scott brown being able to at least have the even money to win back a senate seat in massachusetts. when you talk to the democrats, they say look, the way that scott brown was able to win in 2010 were under very special circumstances. huh a democratic candidate who was not running a good campaign. the democrats were caught unaware and very surprised. you had that very tough debate on health care. you have the vacancy and democrats say you won't have all the situations at the end. they might be able to beat scott brown in a special contest. >> always tough. you think they can pull it off. lastly it was about chuck hegel, feeling it from the left and the right. the defense built up and every time he takes a twitter, he seems to take out chuck hegel. it was a process by which the president gets leaked out. >> two problems that are besetting chuck hegel. he is

. the brown and the gray. what are the differences between them and how are they clashing now that we get closer and closer to the fiscal cliff? >> the brown and the gray is a phrase i've been using for the last few years to describe the two giant generations that will shape american life in the coming decades. the brown is the millennial, the most diverse in american history. over 40% nonwhite. the gray is the aging baby boom which is joining the silent generation in a huge senior cohort that is 80% white. and they have very different political inclinations, preferences and different interests at stake in the fiscal cliff and budget negotiations. on the one hand, taxes verse spending and so does the kind of spending. discretionary spending mostly investments in the future. entitlement spending mostly income security for the older generation. >> so who benefits if we do cross the fiscal cliff? >> i think there is no question that getting the debt and deficit under control is in the interests of younger generations so they are not saddled with debt solely for our current consumption. but h

of senator scott brown until january 3rd coming back to d.c. because he was hearing reports of a possible piece of legislation. that got everybody in a frenzy until it was completely, thoroughly shot down by both the white house and many senior aides here on the senate side. so basically, craig, we are nowhere. if house is out of town. the speaker of the house john boehner says it's up to harry reid and the senators and up to mitch mcconnell to allow an up or down vote for 50 and not 60 votes. meanwhile, mitch mcconnell says it's up to the president to act and to lead. i mean, basically, what we have is the president insisting on the package that he's insisted on all along. those making more than $250,000 to have the taxes raised, some january 1st. nonstarter. abundantly clear in the house of representatives. there's some question here and harry reid said he expects to go over the fiscal cliff. can there be a retroactive package passed to help stave off the dramatic series of tax hikes for all americans? >> the office of mcconnell releasing a statement acknowledging that conversation with

'm patti ann browne in for martha maccallum patti ann: local crews said there is only one thing that could have accused the damage. >> one thing they saw damage indicative of tornado damage. we had homes 90% destroyed. that doesn't happen with straight line winds. >> you have a lot of damage. people hurt and i went out with the skid steer. we rounded up equipment. we started opening the road for emergency vehicles and get ambulances in. it's a mess. gregg: we are live from "america's newsroom" to elizabeth prann. elizabeth? >> reporter: hi, gregg. yeah, very unusual time of year for such destructive storms. in fact damaging tornados across the southeast. strong winds as far as texas. folks were celebrating their christmas evening as storms left00 of thousands of without power at any given time. the system moved through parts of alabama, georgia, mississippi and parts of florida. the biggest city to be hit by numerous rare winter twisters as well as powerful straight line winds. forecasters say there could have been as many as 19 tornados that ripped through the area. trees and power lines
again, gregg. i'm patti ann browne in for martha maccallum. there is little to no progress reported in making a deal to avert across the board tax hikes for 90% of american households. president obama on his way back to washington right now but not all the lawmakers are there and if congress and the president do not reach a compromise before january 1st many analysts say the economy will slide back into a recession. gregg: mike emanuel is live on capitol hill. mike, any indication of the president's next move? >> reporter: well, gregg, last time we heard the president talk about the this matter he said he was calling on congressional leaders to essentially make sure taxes do not go up on middle class americans. presumably that would be a package that continues the bush tax cuts for those making up to $250,000. he would also like to continue emergency unemployment benefits for two million americans. and beyond that, details are kind of murky at this point. so we await the president to get back to washington. we know that the senate will be back in session today. we know there have be
